An introduction to Raw Food

What is Raw Food?

Raw food is a lifestyle and is humanities original way of eating

If you eat uncooked salads then you already eat raw foods. If you eat peanuts or any kind of nuts (technical note: only unpasteurized nuts count as raw) or sushi then you already eat raw foods. Fifty thousand years ago we were all raw foodists 100%

Technically Raw food is food that is never heated over 117 degrees farnetheit. Anything over 117 is the magic point where we would instincivly pull our hands away from it. Thus raw foodists naturally choose that temperature as the cut off.

Can it taste good and be satisfying?

I heard raw food and thought rabbit food. I was shocked to discover how rich raw food can be. Raw Food chef’s can be very creative in making raw food taste like the old favorites we love. For example, I have had delicious hamburgers where the patty was made from nuts and I could barely tell the difference. Pasta lovers also rejoice because there are ways to make raw pasta and it even helps you lose weight too. My whole nutrition system is based on taking the delicious foods we love, integrating a raw element into it to preserve the fiber and proteins and making it even more delicious! Great tasting recipes that will help you lose weight fast.

Raw Food is also extremely nourishing and filling in a good way. It would usually take twice as much cooked food to satisfy my appetite the way raw food does. Cat’s explanation is that the raw food is just more nourishing because all it;s proteins and minerals have not been killed off by heat, so you need less of it. Wow that makes it affordable and a good value even when you factor in the higher cost of high quality raw and organic foods.

Organic, then Vegan and now Raw? What is the difference?

Certain foods can be all three and a person can incorporate all three concepts into their lifestyle all at once. A food is considered organic when it is grown for a certain number of months with no pesticides or artificial drugs. Vegan referrers to a lifestyle where the person eats no meat or eggs or any animal products. There is a big debate in the Vegan community about honey. Raw is as stated above food taken right from the ground and not heated over 117 degrees.

The Raw food movement integrates and encompasses organic and vegan. Raw foodists eat their food raw so they do demand that the food be untouched by pesticides and artificial methods etc, hence they only eat organically certified foods. Most raw foodists are also vegan but you don;t have to be. I have enjoyed many raw burgers or raw bison and beef. I also love sushi and sashimi and that is raw yet not Vegan.

Can a raw food diet help me lose weight fast?

Yes. I tried a two week Raw Cleanse which Cat Erickson of World Redress guided me through and lost 15 lbs. Here are the results of the weight loss

A Raw food lifestyle will also insure you keep it off. Raw Foods biggest advantage for me is that it forces us to get all the fiber we were meant to get. Fiber is the one critical element that has been cut out of processed diets andwe have sufferred the disease of obesity for it. Raw food fixes this fiber problem automatically.

Do I have to go 100% Raw and Vegan to lose weight and keep it off?

No . If you just go 60% Raw you will see huge benefits. As for Vegan, that is totally unnecessary. Meat in moderation is a wonderful thing for your health and taste buds.

Who is doing this Raw Food thing?

Guys always ask me this. This movement has been around for over twenty years and while most of the people doing it now are women many are seeing the benefits.

  • Every cave man that ever lived
  • Every animal on earth
  • Woody Harrelson
  • Alicia Silverstone
  • Demi Moore
  • And now me, Ray :)

OK Fine, but how do I start?

Starting is as easy as eating chocolate.

Just make yourself an awesome Chocolate Elixir in the morning. It tastes great and is loaded with protein and good fats, it’s also Raw. In the coming months I will be showing you how to integrate raw food into your day and be enjoying the taste of your food more than ever before. Watching the weight fly off your body will just be a bonus.

Wait… Can I actually put muscle on this Rabbit F.. I mean Raw Food?

YES! I am now experimenting with this. MY goal is to put on a solid 30lbs of muscle as fast as I can on a Raw Food Diet. Results soon!

Ultimate Pickle Recipe

I love pickles!!!

Crunchy, cool and with those earthy smoked and exotic flavors. Pickles aren’t just an awesome compliment to the taste of nearly any meal but they are also an excellent source of fiber and they moderate your appetite in a healthy way.

Here is my Ultimate Pickle Recipe. There is quite a bit here you might not have so I will first list the necessary ingredients then all the optional ones that make it “Ultimate”

  1. Take your pickling cucumbers and put them in your pickle jar. ( This time I used Japanese pickles but any little cucumbers will do.
  2. Then fill the pickle jar with water to about 85% full with the pickles still inside.
  3. Take the water from the pickle jar and put it into your blender.

We did this so we can know how much water we are working with. Now we can start adding all the other ingredients to the water in the blender to make the ultimate Pickling Juice!

  • 5 cups of water (Bottled water is preferable)
  • 10 cups of Sea Salt (For every 5 cups of water add a tablespoon of salt. My pickle jar held 5 cups of water so I added 10 cups of Salt)
  • 1 whole head of garlic
  • 1/4  cup of onions

Above are the base ingredients, now here is my special Pickling Spice Recipe that really gives it that pickle flavor. You can buy Pickling seeds/Spice already made as well. Use what you have. If you are missing things it will still taste great!

Just throw it all into the water in the blender

  • 1 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar ( Any vinegar will do but Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar is my current favorite )
  • 2 tbsp of Braggs Essential Aminos (Braggs will add protein and a nice soy Sauce flavor,. Nama Shoyu Raw Soy Sauce is also great )
  • 1/2 tsp of Tumeric
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seed
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin – Cumin adds an amazing taste and is a principal ingredient in curry. It has so many special health benefits it deserves its own article.
  • 1/2 tsp Cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp Cilantro Leaf
  • 1/2 tsp Smoked Peppercorn ( any pepper will do)
  • 1 tbsp Ginger root or 1 tsp Ginger powder
  • 3 Bay Leaves – Adds Crunchiness

After you have throw that into the blender you are ready to blend it all together and pour it into the jar or you can go for major extra credit and use these secret ingredients to go for “Ultimate Pickles”

  • 1/2 tsp Maca – A potent Aphrodisiac made from a South American Root
  • 1/2 tsp Mesquite – Used mostly in BBQ! Sauce Mesquite has all the essential minerals and adds an awesome Earthy flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp Sea Kelp – Sea Weed rocks and it adds a special flavor and nutrients
  • 1 tsp Gen Mai Chai Green Tea Leaves – The smoked brown rice flavor of Gen Mai Chai is just excellent and the Green Tea gives the pickles a energy boosting effect as well!

Just Blend it all up, pour it into the pickle jar and put it in the fridge for 3 days.

You can keep using this amazing juice over and over again with new cucumbers and whatever else you want to pickle. Mine lasted about two months before it started going bad. The Salt and Vinegar act as natural perservatives.

Enjoy the amazing taste and feel the energy you get from these Pickles, Ultimate Pickles ;)

Raw Vegan Dumplings

Dumplings have always been a favorite food of mine.

Sneaking off to NYC’s Chinatown for a feast of these pork filled, deep fried, white flour battered tasty delights brings back fond memories. Well, memories are not good enough. I WANT MY DUMPLINGS NOW!

We all deserve dumplings! Dumplings should taste great and be good for you. By good I don’t just mean made of the best ingredients and “healthy”. Dumplings should put muscle and you and get you ripped! That is what health means to me.

Why are these Dumplings so good for you?

  • No Carbohydrates
  • Tons of Protein
  • Good Fats
  • Lots of Fiber
  • Only natural low glycemic sugar

These Raw Vegan Curry Dumplings have NO CARBOHYDRATES!!!! Yes that is right, you can eat these things all day. I skipped my protein smoothie and just ate them yesterday. They are just Protein, Fiber and Good Fats. The only sugar in them is the sugar from the nuts. WOW!!! Lets just do it now.

Raw Vegan Curry Dumplings Recipe

This is a simple Recipe that comes in three parts.

Dumpling Stuffing

  • Almond Nut Paste – any kind of nut will do.  Experiment ;)
  • 1 Avocado chopped
  • 4 Garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 Leek finely chopped – I used the white part only and the green part for a salad later
  • 4 Cups Greens finely chopped. I used a mixture of Dandelions, Kale, Celery and Cilantro. Use whatever greens you have.

Dumpling Skin

  • A whole head of Cabbage ( one whole leaf per dumpling ) Maybe two whole heads of cabbage depending on how much dumpling stuffing you have.

Curry Sauce of Krishna  ( Feel free to make much more of this to use in other things :)

  • 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
  • 1 Cup of Almond Nut Milk
  • Coconut Water from a whole young Thai Coconut
  • 1 Teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1 Teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 Teaspoon Cardamom
  • 1 Teaspoon Grahm Masala
  • 4 cloves of Garlic
  • 1/2 cup Onions
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cheyenne

How to prepare

First Get the Curry Sauce Ready. Mix all the Curry sauce Ingredients together in a bowl and stir. The tough part here is the Almond milk.

To make Almond Milk & Almond Paste you should

  1. Soak a cup of Almonds in water for at least 2 hours.
  2. Then throw them into the blender with twice as much water and Blend until fine. The VitaMix 5200 is the only blender I know that does this job. It’s expensive but worth it. Once you have it all blended then you will have to seperate the milk from almond fiber. For that you will need a Nut Milk Bag.
  3. Put the nut milk bag into a pot and then pour the almond milk into it. Watch as the liquid part seeps through the porous nut milk bag. Squeeze the nut milk into the pot by massaging the bag. You will then have a cup of Almond Nut Milk and a bunch of Almond Nut paste. We will use the Almond Nut paste for the Dumpling stuffing.

To make the Dumplings

  1. Take some cabbage leaves and put them in a pot with a little water, put the lid on and put it on the lowest heat you can. Leave them in there until they wilt enough to handle easily. As long as the heat doesn’t go over 118 degrees it is still considered raw and if it isn’t oh well :) Should take about 10 minutes. It may help to decore the cabbage with a knife before peeling off the leaves.
  2. Combine all the ingredients for the Dumpling Stuffing  into a big bowl and mash and stir until it is all nice and consistent. Depending on the ripeness of the Avocado you might need to mash for a while longer.
  3. Mix in the Curry Sauce and stir until the stuffing and sauce are at a good consistency.
  4. Your cabbage leaves should now be ready to stuff. Take a cabbage leaf lay it down and put in a chunk of the Dumpling Stuffing. Try and wrap them tightly.
  5. Put the left over cabbage into the steaming pot so that the bottom of the pot is covered. Then add some Bragg’s sauce or Soy Sauce.  This will keep the dumplings from getting too hot or breaking apart from the heat. It also gives you yummy soy flavored cabbage to munch on after all the dumplings are done :) For me the best part is nothing is wasted.
  6. Put the dumplings back into the pot to steam for a just a little while longer.  Take them out and serve on a plate or in the pot and you are done!

Coconuts, God’s Sport Drink

Coconut Water …

  • Is 100% sterile
  • Hydrates you faster than water or any other fliud on earth
  • Has a fresh and sweet natural taste
  • More Nutritious than whole milk – Less fat, NO cholesterol and it has lauric acid which is found in human mothers milk

Coconuts are simply a gift from nature. I have one every morning in my morning smoothie. I have another one right after my workout just by itself like Baby Ray is enjoying above. It is an amazingly tasty reward and I can just feel it hydrating my body.

Making coconuts a part of your daily intake will insure you will lose weight. It is even more satisfying to know that they taste so amazingly good. Too often we turn to food to satisfy our oral fixations. Women are especially vulnerable to this, they use food to soothe themselves. Almost 100% of the time when we turn to food with such emotion we are not really hungry, we just want to put something in our mouth. Water is not enough because our minds have been programmed to think that water cannot satisfy our emotional hunger.

Hydration & Coconut Water

Coconut water is a secret of hydration and hydration is the key to curbing your appetite. When you can turn to a delicious sweet tasting and nutritious drink instead of food, you start to reprogram your mind to eat only when hungry. The other major effect is that the coconut water will hydrate your body better than anything else. The magic here is that being well hydrated makes you far less hungry, thus the next time you eat will be when you are actually hungry and you will eat far less than you would have because being hydrated will moderate your appetite.

Coconut water VS  most sports drinks ( based on a 100ml sample )

  • Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks.
  • Coconut water has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg!
  • Coconut water has only 5mg of Natural Sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25mg of Altered Sugars.

Coconuts Tips

  • Always look for coconuts still closed, like the drawing above.
  • South East Asian Coconuts are the best
  • Cook all your meals with Coconut Oil / Butter. It is my favorite cooking oil.

What do the Experts think

  • “Coconut water is the very stuff of Nature, biologically Pure, full of Natural Sugars, Salts, and Vitamins to ward off fatigue… and is the next wave of energy drinks BUT natural!”,  -Mortin Satin, Chielf of the United Nation’s Food & Agriculture Organization.
  • “The research over four decades concerning coconut oil in the diet and heart disease is quite clear: coconut oil has been shown to be beneficial.” - Dr. Mary Enig  ( For further reading: Mary G. Enig, Coconut: In Support of Good Health in the 21st Century )

More Coconut Facts

  • Coconut water hydrates us faster than any other fluid on earth.  The water is  a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood plasma.
  • Here is a little secret about hydration, when your urine gets bubbly you know you are well hydrated, only coconuts do that.
  • Coconut water is completely sterile. It takes a coconut anywhere from 8 months to a year to mature. The entire time water is being filtered through the husk which sterilizes it.
  • Coconut water being sterile and a near perfect match for our blood was used during the Pacific War of 1941-45, both sides in the conflict regularly used coconut water – siphoned directly from the nut – to give emergency plasma trasfusions to wounded soldiers.
  • Nearly 50% of the fatty acid in natural coconut oil is lauric acid, which converts to the fatty acid monolaurin in the body. Lauric acid has adverse effects on a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, fungi, and enveloped viruses. It destroys the lipid membrane of such enveloped viruses as HIV, measles, Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), influenza and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Its usefulness in treating AIDS is currently under investigation. It is a main component of human breast milk and helps protect children from illness during infancy.
  • The English word Coconut comes from Spanish and Portugese word coco, which means “monkey face.” Spanish and Portugese explorers found a resemblance to a monkey’s face in the three round indented markings or “eyes” found at the base of the coconut.
  • On the Nicobar Islands of the Indian Ocean, whole coconuts were used as currency for the purchace of goods until the early part of the twentieth century.
  • In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpa vriksha, meaning “tree which gives all that is necessary for living,” since nearly all parts of the tree can be used in some manner or another.
  • Coconuts are not actually nuts, but seeds.
  • Coconuts are the largest known seeds on Earth.

Bison Curry Balls

Meat Balls and Curry have to be two of my favorite things. Bison meat is a new favorite.

For those of you who get the video game references, you know know what a Geeky Gamer I am, and the rest of you now know that I am not 100% Vegan.

Bison Meat is Amazing

Bison is also known as the American Buffalo. These animals ran in great herds that the native American Indians relied on so completely for food and sustenance. They respected the Bison greatly and honored them with rituals and art. Thankfully not all the herds were wiped out and we now have some ranchers raising these amazing animals for milk, meat and more. We bought our Bison meat from a herder that has raising open range Bison for almost 100 years.

Bison are far bigger than cows and more strongly built. Despite their size and power they are extremely agile and can  pivot off both front and hind feet. You are what you eat and I would rather eat an athletic and happy animal then a poor hormone filled creature that has not been allowed to take a single step since birth like the cows we get our beef from.

Bison is much leaner than beef and open range bison is so much leaner than the leanest meat industry beef that you will be shocked at it’s light yet satisfying taste. A Bison burger tastes great and won’t weight you down like a beef burger will.

Bison Curry Balls Recipe

  • 1 lb of ground Open Range raw Bison meat
  • 2 Open Range Chicken Eggs
  • 1 tablespoon of curry powder
  • 1 table spoon of grahm masla powder
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • half a shallot or 1  onion
  • a pinch of Sea Salt
  • 1 cup of nutritional yeast to help hold the meat balls together ( Bison has so little fat it falls apart easily )

Feel Free to serve these Bison Curry Balls on a bed of Power Rice or on a bed of Soba noodle with some saunce. For this dish we used Soba with some of Cat Erickson’s of WorldRedress.com Raw Vegan Cheesy Nut sauce.  Soba is my favorite noodle and pasta and if you look at how much protein it has and how it tastes you will see why.

How to prepare

Just take all the ingredients and mix them up by hand. Then turn them into meat balls and cook them as you like. I prefer mine as raw as possible :)

Power Rice

Power Rice is the first dish I ever cooked.

As a bachelor in my first New York City apartment I set out to cook. It was a primitive affair and I barely knew how to use a stove. After buying a pot and learning how to cook rice I hit the Trader Joe’s across the street and through my imagination and love for food the first recipe for Power Rice was born. The first power recipe was basically everything I had bought that day at Trader Joe’s thrown together with brown rice. It had bacon,  avocado, nuts, and all manner of things.

This new upgraded power rice is far better tasting, more nourishing and it makes alot more sense.

Power Rice Recipe * Sponsored by Quetzalcoatl

  • Red Quinoa 1 cup
  • Wild Rice 1 cup
  • Green Lentils 1 cup
  • 2 Avacados
  • Half a head of garlic
  • 2 Shallots
  • Cumin half teaspoon
  • Walnut Oil 1 teaspoon
  • Cilantro
  • 3 Open Range Chicken Eggs cooked half way * Remove and this recipe becomes Vegan
  • Maca Powder 1 teaspoon
  • Braggs Amino Acids (like soy sauce for eggs) 1 spoon

How to prepare

Put the quinoa, Wild Rice and Lentils into a rice cooker. Add at least 4 times as much water as quinoa, rice and lentils. If you have no rice cooker then do it the old fashioned way, with a pot water and stove top. Cook for at least 45 minutes. While the quinoa, rice and lentils cook prepare the salad.

Take two avocados and put them into a bowl, a few heads of garlic and chop them finely, garlic powder will also do. Chop up two shallots and put them into the bowl as well. If shallots are not around then simply use onions or scallions. I like shallots because they are milder than onions. Add some cumen powder and cilantro to it for flavor. I love adding some walnut oil to this dish to give it a deep smoky flavor, olive oil can also do but it is not necessary. Mix this all up.

Start to boil a pot of water on the stove top. When it begins bubbling put three eggs into it. I always go for the open range vegetarian fed chicken eggs but use whatever you have. Once the eggs are in the boiling water, time them for about 2:45 to 3:00 minutes. This will ensure the eggs are hard enough to peel but also leave them with a nice softness in the yolk which I personally love.

Once the quinoa is done put it into a bowl. You can then out the avocado salad on top of the quinoa and mix it into it or eat it seperatly. Same goes with the eggs. Do what feels right.

Why is this recipe sponsored by an Aztec God?

Quetzalcoatl was the patron god of the Aztec priesthood, of learning and knowledge. Quetzalcoatl respected things which were well crafted and those strong people who used such things to empower and serve their communities. Once can see how we would appreciate such a well crafted and designed recipe as Power Rice.

Quinoa, Maca, Avocados are all South American dishes thus you see Quetzalcoatl’s love and association/sponsorship of this dish ;)

Here are my favorite twists on Power Rice

  • Curry Power Rice of Krishna : This awesome curry rice is coming soon
  • Teriyaki Power Rice of Musashi: My special Raw Teriyaki recipe coming soon
  • Power Rice of Sparta: Thinking about it… Feta Cheese :)
  • Add your own spin on Power Rice and leave a comment! :)

Let’s see what makes it so nutritious

  • Red Quinoa: Quinoa is actually a seed and is closely related to spinach and beets. It makes a great grain replacement. The Incas, who held the crop to be sacred, referred to quinoa as chisaya mama or mother of all grains, and it was the Inca emperor who would traditionally sow the first seeds of the season using ‘golden implements. Its protein content is very high (12%–18%), making it a healthy choice for vegetarians and vegans. Unlike wheat or rice(which are low in lysine), quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it an unusually complete protein source. It is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron. Quinoa is gluten-free and considered easy to digest. Because of all these characteristics, quinoa is being considered a possible crop in NASA’s Controlled Ecological Life Support System for long-duration manned spaceflights. Of all the kinds of Quinoa the red Bolivian quinoa I have found to be the most nutritious and it has an excellent nutty taste.
  • Wild Rice is a true rice and as such it has not been hybridized by humans. It is far more nutritious than white rice and even brown rice. Wild Rice has no Gluten and is thus easy to digest.
  • Green Lentils: With approximately 26% of their calories from protein, lentils and generally any pulses or legumes have the third-highest level of protein, by weight, of any plant-based food after soybeans and hemp.
  • Cumin is the second most popular spice in the world, next to black pepper. It is used today in Middle Eastern, Mediterrean and Spansh cooking. It helps to add an earthy and warming feeling to cooking making it a staple in certain stews and soups.
  • Walnut Oil: has the most amazing taste and it gives nearly anything this powerful deep rich roasted flavor that is simply amazing. It is also one of the most nutritious cooking oils in the world.
  • Maca powder is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur and iron, and contains trace minerals, including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica, as well as vitamins B1, B2, C and E. Maca contains nearly 20 amino acids and seven essential amino acids.. During the height of the Incan Empire, legend has it that Incan warriors would consume maca before entering into battle. This would make them fiercely strong. But after conquering a city the Incan soldiers were prohibited from using maca, to protect the women from excessive sexual impulses. LOL Now you know why I love it. Maca is an amazing natural aphrodesiac, but don’t worry your little guy won’t grow up to be a sex maniac they will just be grow up to be alot sexier.
  • Braggs Amino Acids is an amazing replacement for soy sauce. It has that awesome soy sauce taste with no MSG and it is loaded with protein!

Wow, Power Rice gets Quetzalcoatl recommendation on nutrition alone. It gets the support of a certain Egyptian on taste alone as well.

Baby Puree

Nothing feels better than getting babies started right, espcially with nutrition.

My good friend Heather just had a baby and it really got me thinking about how amazing it would be to nurture a newborn with the very best food on earth the second they stop breast feeding. A vegetable rich green puree is an awesome start and they should have it once a day. They will ask for it so much more though as  tt is amazingly delicious and very sweet. Even better it also low glycemic and incredibly nutritious! It is also made from totally raw and organic  ingredients so it comes straight from the earth as nature intended.

But wait… Why can’t you just buy baby food?

You would think that when it comes to our kids the big commercial food corporations would stop the funny business and only use the best ingredients but the truth is it is just business as usual for them. Commercial baby food is processed and you will find many less than stellar ingredients in them such as refined sugar and sometimes even corn syrup.

Most commercial baby food is notoriously high in sugar and this can wreck havoc with your baby blood sugar setting them up for diabetes later. The great thing is we can make our own awesome tasting baby food that is nourishing, low in sugar and can also help to regulate a baby’s blood sugar. The secret is to use your own local fresh ingredients and real whole super foods. Without further delay here is my …

Baby Green Knockout Puree Recipe

  • 1 Young Thai Coconut, water and meat
  • 2 tablespoons of Coconut Oil
  • 1-2 cups greens ( dandelions, spinach or organic lettuce )
  • 1-2 tablespoons of Raw Honey
  • 1 Apple
  • Half a Lemon
  • Half a tablespoon of Stevia
  • 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon
  • 1 spoon of Mesquite
  • 1 spoon of Lúcuma
  • 1 tablespoon of Maca
  • 2 spoons of Sun Warrior Protein
  • 1 spoon of Blue Green Algae

Blend it, in Style

Put this all into a blender until it is consistent and will still hold in a spoon well enough to feed the little fellow. I Highly recommend the VitaMix 5200 Blender.  It is expensive but it will change the way you eat and if anyone deserves the best it is your child. Check out their site http://www.vitamix.com and use Coupon Code 06-004792 for Free Shipping and a discount.

The Science of Baby Food

Each of these ingredients is amazing and together they make the ultimate food. I have this every morning ( except I add nutmilk to make it more like a drink rather than a puree as I am not an infant lol ) It keeps me going through an intense 3 hour boxing training session and I even have a jar of it afterwards to feed my muscles and regulate my blood sugar. Your kid will be Knockin’ em out!

  • Young Thai Coconuts are the best coconuts and coconuts in general are amazing. They are the most hydrating liquid you can have because their milk matches the consistency of the plasma in your blood more than any other fluid in nature, other than your own blood of course. Also the milk of a coconut is completely sterile. The coconuts thick shell and complex natural fibers act as a filtration system that totally cleans the water over a period of eight months.  WOW Oh and they have an awesome natural sweetness! Coconuts are so good for you I will be writing a Coconut article soon.
  • Coconut Oil is one of the best fats on earth. We all need good fats. The more active you are the more good fats you need for recovery of muscles and various organs, most importantly the brain. If you are literally growing everyday at a rapid rate then you must have as many good fats as you can get. Coconut oil is also an immune system booster. Nearly 50% of the fatty acid in natural coconut oil is lauric acid. Lauric acid destroys the lipid membrane of such enveloped viruses as HIV, measles, Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), influenza and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Its usefulness in treating AIDS is currently under investigation. It is a main component of human breast milk and helps protect children from illness during infancy. Find it at your local organic market or get Raw certified organic Coconut Oil online
  • Dandelions is a great detoxifying agent. You may ask why a new born would need to be detoxified as they are basically brand new. Newborns start out fighting off a world that they see as foreign and toxic compared to the sterile womb they knew for 9 months. They accumulate many toxins in those first few weeks until their immune systems adapt and anything that helps them detoxify is good. Dandelions are also one of the least hybridized crops so you can usually get it as the earth originally made it. Spinach or organic lettuce will also do, or any other green on hand but my current favorite is Dandelions :)
  • Raw Honey is honey straight from the bee’s. It is thicker and has a more natural sweetness. Plain old honey and even organic honey have been pasteurized and often processed so they have lost much of their natural healing properties. Honey has been used as Warrior food by the Spartans, Egyptians and Incas alike.
  • Apples are one of the best tasting natural sweetners. A fresh fuji apple’s glycemic index is far lower than commercially sold apple juice.
  • Stevia is an amazing all natural sweetener with no sugar! It’s sweetness saturates anything you put it in and it’s glycemic value is near zero so you know your baby’s blood sugar will remain balanced and optimal. It is very important to make certain that your baby’s blood sugar levels do not get spiked too often. The higher our blood sugar goes the more our pancreas must work to process it. This can cause insulin imbalances which can make them more prone to type 1 diabetes later in live. The pancreas is especially sensitive at this age and treating it right now will pay off handsomely later! Check out my Best Sweetners Review for more low glycemic Sweetner options
  • Cinnamon is one of the most medicinal spices on earth and it makes things taste great. Cinnamon’s essential oils also qualify it as an “anti-microbial” food, and cinnamon has been studied for its ability to help stop the growth of bacteria Cinnamon also contains the mineral chromium which helps you balance your blood sugar. Keeping your baby’s blood sugar balanced is one of the most important things you can do for their health, especially for the future. Too often young children are forced to eat Baby Food that is extremely high in sugar and this is one of the main culprits in juvenile diabetes.
  • Lúcuma is a popular flavoring for ice cream in in Peru even exceeds the demand for more globally popular flavors such as strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla so you know it tastes great.  In fact, it was once referred to as the Gold of the Incas. Lúcuma an excellent source of carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. It has lots of beta-carotene, niacin (B3) and iron. It is also low glycemic! Lúcuma powder is an awesome an nutritious sweetener.
  • Lemons: Lets talk about just how amazing the common lemon is. In traditional medicine, the lemon is widely known for its healing powers and is used in many different ways. In fact, the lemon is so powerful that it was used by the Romans as their cure for all types of poison. Because of its high vitamin C content, it is thought to help prevent and treat many infections, hasten wound healing and temper down high fever. Lemon juice also relieves symptoms of asthma, tonsillitis and sore throat. Pretty amazing for a fruit we take for granted. The sourness they add works amazingly well with the sweetness of this recipe.
  • Mesquite is of particularly great value to those looking to balance blood sugar levels. Mesquite flour offers a naturally sweet flavor to recipes, but its sugars are derived from fructose (which does not require insulin to digest and is readily metabolized). Additionally, the flour is an excellent form of fiber – meeting almost a quarter of daily needs in just two tablespoons – which not only improves digestion but further benefits sugar metabolism. Mesquite also contains lysine (an amino acid), as well as notable quantities of digestible protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. As such a balanced food, it is easy to see why our Native American ancestors relied so heavily on mesquite as a staple form of delicious nourishment. Mesquite comes in a powder that is easy to put into anything.
  • Maca is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur and iron, and contains trace minerals, including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica, as well as vitamins B1, B2, C and E. Maca powder is simplest way to get this amazing supe rfood into nearly anything.
  • Sun Warrior Protein: Your body needs protein to heal, regenerate and grow. Babies easily use all the protein they can get, much more so than we adults so it is even more important that they get as much of the best protein as possible so they achieve their maximum growth potential. Sun Warrior Protein is the only protein powder I use. The reason? It is actually a real whole food, not just a supplement like every other protein powder out there.  It is not made from whey, which is processed from pasteurized milk. Read my Milk article to see why pasteurized dairy products must be avoided.
  • Blue Green Algae is natures ultimate protein source. It is amazing stuff whose benefits are just to numerous.  E3 Live is the top brand of Blue Green Algae but there are many awesome ones.  For parents looking for major extra credit then go with Pure Synergy. It is my favorite and it has way more than just the algae. It is a superfood blend of 60 different plants, herbs, and superfoods. This product was developed and perfected over a 20-year period by Mitchell May, PhD. It was originally conceived to help Mitchell May recover from a severe car accident that caused extreme nerve and tissue damage. I put this into all my green smoothies and anything else I can sneak it into.

Now that’s Super Baby Food

A baby’s health should be taken seriously and no expense should be spared in research and preparation for giving it the very best from the very start. I put together this recipe as if I was going to give it to my own child, assuming I had one.

We live in a world of processed foods and it is easy to make mistakes but we are also blessed to live in a time where there are a select few who have achieved greater awareness and that we can get these products easily. Lets continue to educate each other and pass on our wisdom and experience. Our children are the main benefactors of our awareness! God Bless

Milk, it does a Body NO Good!

Cutting Milk and Dairy out of your diet is one of the best things you can do for your health.

Which one of these glasses of milk would you drink?

  1. Glass of Milk #1 has three drops of Pus put into it
  2. Glass of Milk #2 is loaded with the waste products of very harsh Steroids
  3. Glass of Milk #3 has Pesticide residues in it
  4. Glass of Milk #4 has live Killer Bacteria in it
  5. Glass of Milk #5 has Bovine Antibiotics
  6. Glass of Milk #6 has all of the above
  7. Glass of Milk #7 is clean, pure and taken straight from an open range grass fed cow free of all drugs

The reality is that every glass of milk sold is actually #6. There is hope for us dairy lovers in Magic Glass of Milk #7 but first lets learn why Milk as we know it is a disaster to our Health.

My Personal Journey with Milk

I am EXTREMELY lactose intolerant and for I could barely drink milk without having major diarrhea, gas and bloating. Despite this I loved dairy and would consume cheese or anything else I might have a shot at holding in. For years I had horrible acne, allergies and asthma. They all went away once I just gave up milk completely. Only recently have I given up all pastuerized dairy products and the results are even better. I have lost 13 pounds and my energy levels are much higher. Also my gas is nearly gone. Even better than my new found health is I am now enjoying milk and diary again and it;s better than I have ever had it. Magic glass #7 is the key but first lets talk about why I went through dairy hell my entire life. All milk sold in stores today is pasteurized and homogenized. Lets talk about pasteurization.

Pasteurization

Pasteurization of milk is done by keeping the milk at a temperature of 145 degrees to 150 degrees F. for half an hour, at least, and then reducing the temperature to not more than 55 degrees F. The process was named after Louie Pastuer, the French chemist who invented the process to keep wine and beer from souring. Pasteurization is only meant to reduce the growth of bacteria in milk not kill it off.  Pasteurization was instituted in the 1920s to combat TB, infant diarrhea, undulant fever and other diseases caused by poor animal nutrition and dirty production methods. Modern stainless steel tanks, milking machines, refrigerated trucks and inspection methods make pasteurization unnecessary for public protection.

Good things about Pasteurization

  • Sometimes kills some bacteria and pathogens such as tuberculosis and salmonellosis.
  • Milk can last longer on shelves before souring, 2-3 weeks as opposed to a week ( more profit for dairy industry)

Bad things about Pasteurization

  • Inspection of dairy herds for disease is not required for pasteurized milk
  • Pasteurization does not always kill the bacteria for Johne’s disease suspected of causing Crohn’s disease in humans with which most confinement cows are infected
  • Denatures fragile milk proteins and thus eliminates one of the main benefits, especially for children
  • Destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6
  • Does not remove the Pus, Pesticides and Steroids found in dairy industry cows milk
  • Destroys enzymes, which are essential for proper digestion. The destruction of vital enzymes forces our body, mainly our pancreas to work overtime to produce it’s own enzymes. This puts tremendous unnatural strain on our bodies. More on Enzymes later.
  • Destroys the enyzme phosphatase which helps our bodies absorb the calcium in milk. This frequently leads to rickets, bad teeth, and nervous troubles, for sufficient calcium content is vital to children; and with the loss of phosphorus also associated with calcium, bone and breain formation suffer serious setbacks.
  • Destroys the enzyme Lactase which the body needs to digest the lactose prevalent in milk. Lactase is destroyed by pasteurization, thus we cannot digest most of the pasteurized milk we drink and it putrefies and rots inside of us until expelled.
  • Calves fed pasteurized milk do poorly and many die before maturity.
  • Kills beneficial bacteria which our digestive tract needs to function properly
  • Pasteurization laws favor large, industrialized dairy operations and squeeze out small farmers.

Lets see what other baggage comes with Pasteurized milk.

  • Homogenization: is a process that breaks down butterfat globules so they do not rise to the top. Homogenized milk has been linked to heart disease. The process of homogenization is an extremely violent process for any living fluid to undergone as a massive centerfuge is used to disrupt milk’s natural texture and separation of fat and fluid.
  • Genetic Breeding: Almost all Pasteurized milk today comes from the modern Holstein cow. They have been bred to produce huge quantities of milk–three times as much as the old-fashioned cow.
  • PUS : A cows’ udders were never designed to produce so much milk thus they develop an extremely painful bladder infection called Mastitis. Their bodies naturally try and fight this infection and those white blood cells that die fighting it become Pus. The pus problem has gotten so bad that the government has passed laws limiting the amount of pus that can be in milk. It basically comes out to a limit of two drops of pus allowed in each drop of milk. You’d think the FDA would try to protect us and not allow any pus at all but they do not even enforce the two drops of pus limit per glass. Instead the average glass of pasteurized milk has over three drops of pus. The FDA lets this slide, such is the power of the dairy industries lobbyists.
  • Antibiotics are also given to them to control this infection. The antibodies are passed on to us and this is one of the main reasons why the antibiotic resistance of the human population is so high, thus we too need more drugs from pharmaceutical companies to fight off the diseases that plague us.
  • Karma:  Cows breed for milk and slaughter by the modern dairy industry are kept in cages so small they cannot even turn around. Imagine living your entire life in a cage the size of a coffin. These creatures are not happy. Would you feed your child milk from a creature that has known misery it’s entire life? The effect has been scientifically noted. Vital nutrients like vitamins A, D, and vitamin K2 are greatest in milk from cows eating green grass, especially rapidly growing green grass in the spring and fall. Vitamins A and D are greatly diminished, and K2 disappears, when milk cows are fed commercial feed. Soy meal has the wrong protein profile for the dairy cow, resulting in a short burst of high milk production followed by premature death. Even milk labeled ”organic” can come from cows in cages. Look for “free range”
  • Pesticides: Real feed for cows is green grass in Spring, Summer and Fall; stored dry hay, silage, hay and root vegetables in Winter. It is not soy meal, cottonseed meal or other commercial feeds, nor is it bakery waste, chicken manure or citrus peel cake, laced with pesticides.

Wow, this information shocks me seeing it all here in one place.  For those not convinced here is some more research with sources.

The Cat Experiment
The experiments of Dr. Francis Pottenger in the 1940’s can help to solve this mystery. In these experiments Dr. Pottenger fed one group of cats a diet consisting of raw milk, raw meat and cod liver oil. Other groups were given pasteurized milk, evaporated milk or sweetened condensed milk instead of raw milk. The results were conclusive and astounding. Those that ate raw milk and raw meat did well and lived long, happy, active lives free of any signs of degenerative disease. Those cats on pasteurized milk suffered from acute illnesses (vomiting, diarrhea) and succumbed to every degenerative disease now flourishing in our population, even though they were also getting raw meat and cod liver oil. By the 3rd generation a vast majority of the cats were infertile and exhibited “anti-social” behavior — in short, they were like modern Americans.

Pasteurized Milk and Children. Parents read up.

What the nations Leading pediatrician has to say about pasteurized milk.
There have been numerous books written in the past decade about the dangers of pasteurized dairy products — the most influential being a book by Frank Oski, MD, the current chairman of pediatrics of Johns Hopkins University and perhaps the most influential pediatrician in this country. It’s called Don’t Drink Your Milk. In it Oski pins just about every health problem in children to the consumption of milk, everything from acute and chronic ear infections, constipation, asthma, eczema, and so on.

Pasteurized Milk Is Implicated in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

  • “Those who consumed cows milk were fourteen times more likely to die from diarrhea-related complications and four times more likely to die of pneumonia than were breast-fed babies. Intolerance and allergy to cow’s milk products is a factor in sudden infant death syndrome.” -The Lancet, vol. 344, November 5, 1994

Pasteurized Milk Causes Allergies—Especially in Young Children

  • “Most formula fed infants developed symptoms of allergic rejection to cow milk proteins before one month of age. About 50-70% experienced rashes or other skin symptoms, 50-60 percent gastrointestinal symptoms, and 20-30 percent respiratory symptoms. The recommended therapy is to avoid cow’s milk.” -Pediatric-Allergy-Immunology, August, 1994, 5(5 Suppl.)

Pasteurized is Linked to Juvenile Diabetes

  • “These new studies, and more than 20 well-documented previous ones, have prompted one researcher to say the link between milk and juvenile diabetes is ‘very solid’.” -Diabetes Care 1994;17 (12)

Pasteurized Milk Causes Mucus, Sinus Infections, Congestion & Ear Infections

  • “At least 50% of all children in the United States are allergic to milk, many undiagnosed. Dairy products are the leading cause of food allergy, often revealed by constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue. Many cases of asthma and sinus infections are reported to be relieved and even eliminated by cutting out dairy.”  -Natural Health, July, 1994, Frank Oski, M.D., Chief of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Medical School
  • “Milk allergies are very common in children… They are the leading cause of the chronic ear infections that plague up to 40% of all children under the age of six.” -Julian Whitaker, M.D., “Health & Healing,” October, 1998, Volume 8, No. 10

Pasteurized Milk Contains Pesticides, Antibiotics & Killer Bacteria

  • “A 1988 FDA survey of milk samples from grocery stores in 10 cities found that 73% of the samples contained pesticide residues.”-Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1991; 47
  • “Milk from cows inoculated with  listeria was pooled for 2 to 4 days and then heated at 162 degrees Fahrenheit for 16 seconds in a high-temperature, short-time pasteurization unit. Live listeria bacteria was then successfully isolated from the milk after heat treatment in 11 of 12 pasteurization trials.” -Journal of Environmental Microbiology. July 1987, (53)
  • “… curing alone may not be a sufficient pathogen control step to eliminate Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli O157:H7 from cheese.” -J Food Prot, 1998 Oct, 61:10

As someone loves milk, cheese and all manner of dairy, this was hard for me to accept but when I saw the evidence I just dropped all pasteurized dairy.

Does this mean no Milk or Cheese ever? No, you can have milk and cheese but it must be the way nature intended…

RAW MILK

Magic Glass #7 is Raw Milk. Raw Milk is the term given to milk that has been taken straight from a open range, grass fed cow free of drugs. This is what people lived off of before the emergence of the modern day dairy industry. There is a reason why all cultures world wide and preindustrial civilizations have valued milk so highly. Raw Milk is simply a wondrous and amazing Health Food. There is also a reason why the modern day dairy industry has had advertising campaigns such as the “Milk does a Body Good” TV ads. Why would they have to advertise something that we have always known is good for us? The reason is the growing rise of people against Pasteurization and the modern dairy industry. Best Natural Sweetners, Lose pounds a month

Losing a few pounds in a month without sacrificing any taste sound good? It can be done.

These all natural sweeteners taste amazing and they have hardly any sugar at all. Sugar is tasty but it quickly gets turned into fat if we are not extremely active. As peoples cravings for sweet things can quickly sabotage anyone’s diet it is best if we have low glycemic options around.

The glycemic count of any food is how quickly it gets absorbed into the blood stream. High Glycemic foods get absorbed very fast into the blood stream.  Diabetics, people with hypoglycemia, or anyone who is concerned with maintaining an even blood-sugar level must take great care to consume only low glycemic foods.

The faster sugar gets into your blood, the faster it will get converted to fat. The below sweeteners are low glycemic meaning they have very little or no sugar and go into your blood very slowly and thus you’ll keep the weight off and drop more pounds. Even better these sweeteners taste better than sugar. Wow, that was easy.

This is my list of the best sweeteners around.

  1. Yacon Syrup:  My new favorite sweetener, fresh pressed from the Yacon root (Smallanthus sonchifolius), this syrup is a gift from nature that has been enjoyed for centuries in the Andean highlands of Peru. IT is low calorie and has a very low glycemic count.  It goes great in coffee, tea, on pancakes and in almost anything. Just try it.
  2. Stevia: is 250 times sweeter than sugar!!! So use sparingly. It’s Taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar. With its extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Medical research has also shown possible benefits of stevia in treating obesity and high blood pressure. Because stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to people on carbohydrate-controlled diets.
  3. Raw Organic Honey: Honey is special food. Bee keepers in general have the longest lifespans around, it’s no wonder with all the honey they eat. The Spartans thought it was food fit for warriors and warriors only, thus they gave it to their strongest. Any honey will do, just make sure it is raw and organic. Honey does have the highest calories and glycemic count of any sweetener on this list but it  will always have a place in my daily life.
  4. Agave Nectar: Amber Agave Syrup has ther soul of molasses and maple syrup, with none of their dark overtones. The light vanilla flavor of this agave shines through clearly. For a richer flavor, combine Amber Agave with Yacon Syrup. Experiment with this sweetener, it might become your new favorite.
  5. Dates:  The prophet Mohammad was said to have eaten three dates every morning for his health. Even better is how sweet they are. When you want to sweeten a smoothie 5 dates will do the job. Any kind of dates are good. Those with blood sugar issues beware, dates have alot of sugar and they go into your blood stream quickly.

I am going to have my morning smoothie now. I will either sweeten it with Agave Nectar, Raw Honey or Dates, at least until my Yacon Syrup arrives. :)
